Yahoo have announced that their free neighboured-themed web hosting service, GeoCities, is to permanently close later this year. With the registration process already suspended, Yahoo will announce this summer their plans how users can export their existing website or upgrade to their paid service.

Founded in 1994, GeoCities were one of the first pioneers to introduce free web hosting (in 1995) giving many Internet users and budding web designers their first experience of web publishing. At the peak of its popularity the service boasted millions of active accounts, however it has since lost its place with the rise of blogging, social networking and cheap web hosting.

GeoCities were bought out by Yahoo in 1999 for $3.57bn.

What were you memories of GeoCities?
