We all know how Facebook and Twitter are rotting the minds of our children and turning us all into antisocial recluses however on June 25th, one Manchester entrepreneur will be looking to disprove these nonsensical headlines and demonstrate emphatically that social media can be a force for good.
Inspired by the Channel 4 show “The Secret Millionaire” and Paul Smith’s Twitchhiker project, owner of Manchester’s Real Fresh TV, Chi-chi Ekweozor decided she would embark upon a hugely ambitious project. The aim: to raise a total of £777,000 for 7 charities by travelling to see the new 7 wonders of the world in 7 days. These 7 charities are:
- Alzheimer’s Research Trust
- Diabetes UK
- Open Doors
- Young Minds
- British Red Cross
- Feed The Minds
- the Jessie Ekweozor Memorial Foundation
In order to raise funds, a major Tweetup will be taking place on Thursday 25th June at the Living Room bar on Deansgate in Manchester. It will consist of music, drinks and a fair bit of twittering, no doubt!
Chi-chi has utilised the skills of local journalists as well as social media and online PR profesionals (@technicalfault, @ricky_chotai, @louisebolotin, @katiemoffat, @manchesterisace, @hereinthehive, @julianlstar) to gain interest and support from local businesses and media in order to spread the good word. Those working in online digital marketing in North West may well be aware that it is the 10th Birthday of Code Computer Love. They will be kicking off their celebrations by joining everyone at the Living room from 6pm.
Music will be provided by top Cellist Peter Gregson (@petergregson) as well as yours truly (@_Chappers_) who will be spinning all manner of lovely jazzy tunes. Peter’s performance will be live streamed here and I’ll be armed with a big box of records as well as my camera so I’ll be sure to blog about the aftermath!
Please come along and support these fantastic charities and have a chat with loads of local Twitterers! Tickets are £4 in advance or £6 on the door. Also be sure to check out the 7 Wonders in 7 Days website to get the full story on how this amazing event has been put together!
If you’re coming along (or if I rudely haven’t credited you!), add a comment below and let us know. And do come and say hello – I’m going to do my level best to put names to Twitter profiles!
