Google Voice Search - The Future of Mobile Search?

Speculation has been rife as to whether Twitter Search could be the greatest threat that Google has faced in recent years. It is far from perfect, however there is clearly potential as this article from Blogstorm suggests.

If Twitter search has the potential to put Google search on the ropes, then perhaps Voice Search could be just the technology that will keep it a few steps ahead of the pack.

Google has said that voice search is a major opportunity for the company to build a significant presence on the mobile web. The Google Mobile site touts some impressive features and benefits however the real issue could be how usable the product actually is.

Sure, the promotional videos make it look entirely straightforward to use however with voice recognition technology still in it’s infancy it is unsurprising that there have been reports that Google mobile struggles with accents. It must also be a mammoth task for Google to recognise and implement usage for the hundreds, or even thousands of dialects that exist.

Until significant breakthroughs in such technology are made, it would seem that voice Search is merely a novelty that is accessible only to the most articulate and well spoken users. And with similar phone services such as directory enquiries still very popular, is it a feature that we really need anyway?
