Designer’s Block

Im sure every graphic designer has met with the blank, insurmountable wall that is “Designer’s Block” at some point in their career. Usually when working on a brief with a tight time frame with the pressure of coming up with something super creative and innovative you are met with the sum total of what we say up north – “nowt.”

This can make even the most seasoned design bods quiver and shake with each glance at the clock, and repeatedly hit (APPLE + D) the mythical design key with decreasing motivation and increasing panic and dread.

But how can this mind drought be overcome? I wish that I could say that there is some way to channel unbelievable graphic design ideas into your skull on demand. Stop staring at a blank photoshop canvas and get up from the Mac and have a walk, eat a pie, stroke a cat, have a cup of tea. I have always found that pretending to be 6 years old, grabbing a big wad of paper and a fellow designer then furiously scribbling shapes with felt tips does the trick.

The main thing is DONT PANIC. Get someone else involved. Have a chat. Designer or not, a fresh pair of eyes and unclogged cortex will 9 times out of 10 kick your jaded ideas into touch, or make you see another approach to the brief, and may just help you create something great.

  • Getting into your creative realm can be quite a problem if you're stuck in a routine. Check out my post at OnWired.com for more tips on creative inspiration:
  • I find that closing my eye's for an hour at my desk is great for getting those creative juices flowing - it shows that you are concentrating extremely hard on the task in front of you and are undistracted by non-creative things that are going on around you. You also awaken with a euphoric sense of wellbeing and superior creative instinct, I think you will agree that it's a great way to generate ideas and give you that creative boost you need.

I propose that we all work together to schedule in regular creative power nap sessions on a daily basis, whos with me?
