We were recently asked by Willow Wood to redesign their existing logo and supporting media and were overjoyed to be chosen to work with such an iconic local brand that supports such a much needed service to the community of Tameside and Glossop.

Willow Wood Hospice provides specialist Palliative Care to those suffering with life-threatening illnesses. The Hospice first opened its doors for Day Hospice patients in May 1999 and for In-Patients the following September. Since then, the Hospice has cared for more than 2,000 patients and their families.

The Charity lays personally with the staff at Fluid Creativity, with some of our friends and family using the purpose built Hospice, and so it was an easy choice to choose Willow Wood as our free charity project for 2010/2011.

With the Logo and Stationery already designed, 2011 sees the launch of the re-brand for Willow Wood and re-establishes the friendly face that’s been apart of Tameside’s history for over 15 years. Fluid Creativity are proud to be a part of this exciting change.

I’m back at work after an extended weekend down in the big smoke. I think all of the smoke comes from their broken tube system which forced me to walk around our nation’s capital for the majority of the weekend. Nevertheless, my travels took me by the fantastic Science Museum in South Kensington. A hugely worthwhile trip, especially as it’s next door to the spectacular Natural History Museum.

Anyway, as I ambled around the Science Museum I came across a fun interactive exhibit on the top floor. What drew my attention away from the screeching children pulling levers and punching their classmates was a fun display where children had drawn their interpretation of what science was. I couldn’t help but snap some pictures so lets cue the music as we take a look at some of my favourites:

6 year old Lucy has made an admirable attempt at recreating the modern spectacle that is a rocket launch. From the looks of things our astronaut friend might want to take a few steps back from the rocket as he’s looking a bit burnt. Either that or he’s from Cheshire and it’s just fake tan.

The rather pretentiously named Someday Maybe has delivered this more elaborate effort. If we do eventually make contact with life from another planet I too would like to imagine that the first exchange would be a high five.

Now I haven’t consulted our lawyers before writing this post, however I’d say there was a fairly strong case for the artist above to claim that they have been plagiarised by the artist below. No one likes to be the victim of creative theft so we’d like to take this opportunity to launch a campaign on behalf of the short changed Mr or Mrs Maybe. We’ve no idea who the artist ‘George’ is below but to be on the safe side if you do see a small child called George then feel free to call them a ‘big meany’. Tell ‘em we sent you.

What could embody the values of science any more than a lustful robot? Beautiful.

Young Lucy Wade has envisioned a colourful future whereby to cut down on the pollution caused by rocket launches, future spacecraft will be fuelled by party poppers judging by the streamers being emitted from the engines of her rocket. Either that or she’s just a really rubbish drawer.

James from Stockport should really handle himself with more dignity and spend his time more productively rather than sitting on a child’s chair at a low desk scribbling ill concieved doodles with baskets of blunt pencil crayons in an attempt to better the efforts of CHILDREN.

Our creative team at Fluid love tinkering around with motion graphics, video and animation, and are always looking to really push what can be achieved with limited budgets without resorting to stock footage. Stock video is great and all, but sometimes you need a very specific result, and the stuff you can find online just isn’t quite right.

Recently we added a zombiefied, disembodied hand as a creepy addition to our homepage (we were getting into the Halloween spirit). We did this in the studio, with zero budget, with some very basic equipment and a bit of a Blue Peter approach.

Here’s a little bit of an insight into how you can achieve some pretty cool special effects with some nice software, and a trip to your local Focus DIY.

The key to most digital special effects is taking your subject, and seamlessly combining it with other filmed elements to make one scene. Imagine you want to have a scene of an actor running away from a giant marauding robot. Rather than spend the next 10 years building said giant robot that can physically chase down a person through the streets of Manchester (though that may be fun) – you could film a miniature robot, or create a robot digitally. You could then film the actor running away, and reacting to the robot. These two pieces of footage are then combined, or “composited” together digitally to create a finished scene.

Hollywood uses lots of complex techniques in order to achieve these effects that can be seen in many modern blockbusters – where actors are shot against blue or green backgrounds. These green screens allow for seamless compositing to happen, as the green / blue background can be removed, or “keyed out” later in post production, allowing the cast to be transported to other worlds or put in mortal danger.

For the kind of composite effects we wanted to achieve at Fluid, we needed a green screen. This was created by our team from several sheets of scrap wood paneling and an outing to the local Focus DIY for the correct coloured paint (a bright, lime green colour was the nearest fit. Think the colour of cheap mushy peas and you can’t go far wrong). We then shot our willing hand model, Scott, against this makeshift green screen.

We even shot our footage on an iPhone4 camera as an exercise in low budget production (and also because our HD camera was in use).

With a bit of tinkering in After Effects (you can find a load of powerful plug-ins designed to make this keying process pretty simple) we composited the footage into our digitally created scene, removing the green background on the footage so it could be seamlessly pasted into the environment.

Here are some examples where we have used this technique on our in house acting department!

As you can see, whilst this is a pretty low-fi approach, you can achieve some pretty cool little effects with a limited amount of equipment. Have a go and experiment with this approach next time you are trawling through boring stock footage, you may be surprised with the results.

If you want to find out a bit more some of the techniques we used, give us a shout on twitter @fluidcreativity

On my recent trip to Walt Disney World I finally got to lay my hands on a Vinylmation, Disney’s version of the popular vinyl toy. Only Disney’s version takes it one step up… every one is shaped as Mickey Mouse! They come in 3″ and 9″ toys. There are quite a few series now available, but my favourite has to be the Toy Story 3 series.

The toys act as bargaining chips around Walt Disney World as you dont know which in the series you’ve bought. Each series comes in a different box, and inside is a sealed bag containing your Vinylmation and collectors card. You can then swap with other collectors, at swap stations within Walt Disney World or online!

It became my husbands quest to buy a Woody Vinylmation after getting a buzz on the first buy, and then a Jessie. We came home at the end of the holiday with 7 in total, swapping 2 Wheezy’s and 2 Jessies… and finally finding Woody on our last morning. (Please, no giggles, it was a serious matter!)

Here a few more of my favourites…

Music inspired Vinylmation by Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante

It’s likely that many of our generation will have got into graphics and animation via messing about with Deluxe Paint on their Amiga as a child. I might not be a designer, but I certainly spent an unhealthy amount of time knocking together cartoons with my little Amiga 1200 and it’s through this enthusiasm that I became aware of the work of Eric Schwartz. This name may be familiar to many fellow Amiga users as a one man Warner Brothers/Disney who’s cartoon characters often adorned the pages of many an Amiga magazine.

Whether you ever owned an Amiga or not, you can’t help but be impressed at this wonderful animation that is sure to bring a tear to the eye of many 20-30something bedroom designers/gamers/coders. Enjoy!
