Rachel originally went to college to do a hairdressing apprenticeship but decided it wasn’t for her, and after working in retail for a few months she gained an apprenticeship with Salford City Council to work with us! And boy are we glad she did, here’s a few of the questions we asked… And all of the answers are serious.

Rachel, you’re often quoted as being in the area. What does this mean and how does one become it? Asked by James (@_Chappers_).

Well, you have to be Manchester born and bred and a bit of a chav – but an awesome chav. There’s no precise definition of ‘the area’. You’re either in it, or you’re not.

Who invented the iPad? Asked by Scott (@splurj).

If it’s chunky homemade soup then it’s the food pipe, and if it’s a thinner soup then the drink pipe.

How do you keep yourself sane at work? Asked by Martin.
I hum and sing in my head. This morning I was singing the ‘we buy any car’ song.

A big well done to Rachel from all of the team at Fluid, and also to Mike who came second! Rachel’s now finished her apprenticeship and has been working with us full-time for over a year.

Required Skills

• Strong experience creating interactive web applications and interfaces using HTML5 and appropriate technologies including CSS3, Canvas, Offline Storage, SVG, Audio/Video media

• Strong experience working with MooTools, jQuery and/or other JavaScript libraries including AJAX.

• Strong working knowledge of Photoshop; able to slice up concepts provided by the creative team in PSD format.

• Experience in developing accessible solutions.

• In depth knowledge of creating maintainable, scalable and cross-browser layouts supporting all major browsers (IE6-9, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera).

• Ability to work in a team environment, you will be required to work well with the existing development / creative teams.

• Familiar with source control principles and comfortable with Subversion.

Experience

We’re looking for somebody who has at least 3+ years of experience within the industry with at least some of it working in an agency environment. We will require example work that showcases your skills with HTML5/Canvas.

Movember Day #15

We are responsible for the web design, development and ongoing search engine optimisation set up and support of Cartridge World’s new UK website (http://www.cartridgeworld.co.uk), which launched this month, and over 200 franchisee microsites (http://www.cartridgeworld.co.uk/store-locator), including development of the back end content management system.

“I’m very excited about this project. The new website was long overdue and it will bring big opportunities for Cartridge World to develop its online presence” says Cartridge World Marketing Communications Manager Lucie Turnbull.

Lee Turner, our MD, said: “We’re very happy Cartridge World chose Fluid to develop their web presence and ongoing strategy. It’s an exciting client to be involved with and we’re already working on some great ideas.”

With the site live, we are concentrating on search engine optimisation for both the main website and the 200 franchisee websites, focusing on local search for the latter.

Unfortunately, we have a couple of rule-breakers, check out rule #4:

“There is to be no joining of the handlebars to your chin.”

We’ll be dealing with this rule-breaking accordingly.

Movember Day #2

The nights are drawing in and the winter months are upon us, which only means one thing, it’s nearly Movember!

We want to help raise the awareness of men’s health “down there” and we’re doing this by joining millions of people around the world who will be growing brilliantly bushy moustaches throughout Movember. We’ll be updating our blog with the progress of our moustachioed boys so you can laugh with/at them and see how their moustache styles are developing.

Prostate and testicular cancers are often ignored by men because they are less likely (than women) to visit their GP if they have a problem. Both of these cancers are highly curable if they are caught early so spreading the word is helping to save lives.

All funds raised will be going to: The Prostate Cancer Charity, Institute of Cancer Research and the Movember Foundation.

Scott’s girlfriend, Jacky Hayward, was diagnosed with cervical cancer at 25 and ever since has been campaigning for testing at the earlier age of 20. In England, women aren’t called for cervical screening until they are 25 but for the rest of Britain the age is 20.

Jacky had four operations to remove her tumour and before the final op she was warned her womb may have to be removed. Fortunately, surgeons were able to avoid a hysterectomy and Jacky didn’t need chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment.

Jacky originates from Wales and would have been screened for cervical cancer at 20 if she hadn’t moved to England. With the earlier screening Jacky’s cervical abnormalities would have been detected sooner and she wouldn’t have had to go through the stress of operations and treatment.
